A Call to Action for Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership in Faith-based Communities
“Jesus Christ is Still Building HIS Church in the Days We are Living, of Every Nation and Tongue.”
Pastors and leaders in the Body of Christ understand that answering the call is only the beginning. Obedience—full and faithful obedience—remains one of our greatest ongoing challenges. Partial obedience is still disobedience. And one area where this tension is most evident is in our collective struggle to live out the two greatest commandments: to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37–39); while critically, modeling our Identity in Christ by strengthening relationships and connections as members of The Body of Christ as a people, which, God recognizes above all other identities ascribed and dictated by the world that are notably rooted in racal and other social divisions. This notion, albeit not new, is critical in the days we are living and if Jesus cracked the sky today, many of us be surprised that we are not accepted with Him as we have chosen the world over Him and His Body, the church, of every nation and tongue. This is a prophetic call to HIS church to once and for all in Western and related culture to understand and model their Identity in Christ, for His glory and their good. Meaning, times are coming when many of our needs may only be fulfilled by another member of the Body of Christ, who will not be of the same race (a social, not Biblical or even scientific construct) as us. God is not divided by race or whatever the world and towers dictate.
Can we truly say we love God if we allow, overlook, or unknowingly perpetuate racial division and harm against His people?
The social construct of race—deeply embedded in American culture—carries with it the weight and legacy of racism. Often, its effects go unrecognized, quietly accepted as social norms. Yet, the Church is called to be set apart, to see clearly where the world has been blind, and to act where others hesitate. If the church isn't following God to build up, encourage, edify and connect members of HIS body, it actively works against Him to tear it down. Where we aren't building up the church, we are building up towers, which, God will harshly judge. (Genesis 11).
We regularly preach and declare God’s love and our Identity in Christ, but are we modeling phileo love in our congregations, ministries, and outreach? Are we quick to take negative and aggressive stances, attitudes and actions against God's people (a person of another race) who we know nothing about? Are we actively breaking down walls of division or unintentionally reinforcing them through silence or inaction and participation or privileges gained from the "world," which, advances racism and division?
In recent years, corporations have led the charge in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts—often out of personal gain, not Godly conviction. Today, as secular institutions begin to retreat from DEI initiatives due to political and cultural pressure, perhaps it is time for the Church to repent and step forward —not with the language of the world, but with a Kingdom-centered understanding of equity, unity, and the intrinsic worth of every person in Christ, for the glory and purposes of God and our ultimate and eternal good.
